Howard is a lonely man who works as a janitor at a toy company. He is also an inventor, and he has created a talking teddy bear named Benji. Benji is Howard's only friend, and he is always there for him. One day, Howard's boss decides to shut down the toy company, and Howard is forced to find a new job. He goes to an interview at a toy store, but he is turned down because he is too old. Howard is devastated, and he decides to go home and drink himself to death. Benji tries to stop Howard from drinking, but he is unsuccessful. Howard passes out, and Benji calls the police. The police arrive and take Howard to the hospital. Howard wakes up in the hospital, and he is told that he has been in a coma for three days. He is also told that Benji has been there with him the whole time. Howard is discharged from the hospital, and he goes back to his apartment. He is still depressed, but he is determined to make a new life for himself. He starts working on a new invention, and he also starts dating a woman named Emily. Howard is finally starting to feel happy, and he is grateful to Benji for being there for him. One day, Howard is working on his invention when he hears a knock at the door. He opens the door, and he sees a group of people from the toy company. They have come to apologize to Howard for firing him, and they want to offer him a job. Howard is thrilled, and he accepts the job. Howard is now a successful toymaker, and he is happy with his life.
