The Terror of the Tongs is a 1937 American crime film directed by D. Ross Lederman and starring Wallace Beery, Ann Dvorak, and Lionel Barrymore. The film is about a Chinese tong leader who is forced to go on the run after he is framed for murder. The film begins with a group of Chinese men gathered in a secret meeting. The leader of the group, Ah Kee (Wallace Beery), is informed that a rival tong leader, Sing Lung (Lionel Barrymore), has been murdered. Ah Kee is suspected of the crime, but he denies it. Ah Kee is arrested and put on trial. The evidence against him is strong, and he is found guilty of murder. He is sentenced to death, but he escapes from prison. Ah Kee goes on the run, and he is pursued by Sing Lung's son, Lee (Sidney Toler). Lee is determined to avenge his father's death, and he will stop at nothing to bring Ah Kee to justice. Ah Kee eventually finds refuge in a small town. He changes his name and starts a new life. However, Lee is still on his trail, and he eventually tracks Ah Kee down. A showdown between Ah Kee and Lee ensues. In the end, Ah Kee is killed, and Lee is avenged. The Terror of the Tongs is a well-made crime film with strong performances from Wallace Beery and Lionel Barrymore. The film is a classic example of the gangster genre, and it is still entertaining to watch today.
