City in Darkness is a 1939 American crime film directed by Herbert I. Leeds and starring Humphrey Bogart, Ann Sheridan, and Lloyd Nolan. The film is about a police detective who is investigating a series of murders in Chinatown. The film opens with a murder in Chinatown. The victim is a Chinese man who has been stabbed to death. The police are called to the scene and Detective James Lee (Humphrey Bogart) is assigned to the case. Lee is a Chinese-American detective who is well-respected by the Chinese community. He is able to get information from the witnesses that the police would not be able to get otherwise. Lee soon discovers that the murder is part of a series of murders that have been taking place in Chinatown. The victims are all Chinese men who have been killed in the same way. Lee is determined to find the killer and bring him to justice. In his investigation, Lee meets a Chinese woman named Mei Ling (Ann Sheridan). Mei Ling is a nightclub singer who is also a member of the Chinese underworld. She is able to provide Lee with information about the killer. Lee eventually tracks down the killer and brings him to justice. The killer is a Chinese man named Wong (Lloyd Nolan). Wong is a ruthless killer who has been killing Chinese men in order to take over their businesses. Lee's investigation has brought him into contact with the dark side of Chinatown. He has seen the violence and corruption that exists in the underworld. But he has also seen the strength and resilience of the Chinese community. City in Darkness is a well-made crime film that provides a glimpse into the dark side of Chinatown. The film is well-acted by Humphrey Bogart, Ann Sheridan, and Lloyd Nolan. The film is also well-directed by Herbert I. Leeds.
