Sidney Bruhl (James Stewart) is a successful New York City psychoanalyst who is having an affair with his secretary, Emily (Joanne Woodward). Sidney's wife, Myra (Eva Marie Saint), is a former actress who is now a successful playwright. Sidney is approached by a mysterious man named Dr. Brulov (Peter Lawford), who claims to be a former patient of Sidney's. Brulov tells Sidney that he has a plan to murder the President of the United States. Sidney is initially reluctant to participate in the plot, but he eventually agrees when Brulov offers him a large sum of money. Sidney and Emily stage a fake kidnapping of Myra, and Brulov uses the opportunity to kill the President. Sidney is hailed as a hero for saving the President, and he is rewarded with a large cash bonus. However, Sidney soon begins to have second thoughts about the murder. He is haunted by the guilt of what he has done, and he fears that he will be caught. Sidney's guilt eventually leads to his downfall. He confesses to his wife what he has done, and she turns him in to the police. Sidney is arrested and charged with murder. He is found guilty and sentenced to death.
