The Man Who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo is a 1935 American comedy film directed by Stephen Roberts and starring Jack Oakie, Claudette Colbert, and Edward Arnold. The film is based on the 1925 novel of the same name by Georgette Heyer. The film tells the story of a young man named Charles Rainier (Oakie) who is down on his luck and decides to go to Monte Carlo to try his luck at gambling. He meets a beautiful woman named Lady Luck (Colbert) and the two of them fall in love. However, Lady Luck is actually a con artist who is working with a group of criminals to rob the casino. Charles is unaware of this and helps them to carry out their plan. In the end, Charles is arrested and sentenced to prison. However, he is released when Lady Luck confesses to the crime and takes the blame for him. The film was a critical and commercial success. It was nominated for two Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.
