Description

Madame X is a 1937 American drama film directed by Sam Wood and starring Greta Garbo, Herbert Marshall, and John Beal. The film is based on the 1927 play of the same name by Alexandre Bisson and Jacques Deval. The film tells the story of a woman named Madame X (Garbo), who is married to a diplomat (Marshall). She is accused of murdering her lover, but the evidence against her is circumstantial. She is acquitted, but her reputation is ruined. She leaves her husband and goes into hiding. Years later, her son (Beal) is in love with a young woman (Joan Bennett). The woman's father (Lionel Atwill) is suspicious of Madame X and tries to prevent the marriage. Madame X eventually reveals herself to her son and asks for his forgiveness. Madame X was a critical and commercial success. It was nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
